Dear students, friends and members of Dante Alighieri
Everyone knows "O sole mio" -- or least the Elvis Presley version "It's Now or Never". Neapolitan Songs -- canzoni napoletane -- are as popular today as they were when first written, sometimes more than a century.
We are pleased to offer you a wonderful journey through the great Music tradition of Naples. Guided by opera expert Peter Gordon, we'll review some of the most popular Neapolitan songs -- written by some of Italy's best-known classical composers -- in classical, folkloric and popular styles, and how they have spun off to become a part of modern popular culture, not just in Italy but worldwide. We'll listen to some not so well-known as well as some modern versions of this traditional art form. These are songs of love, passion, jealously and war. You will see the sun, smell the flowers and feel the breezes off the Bay of Naples
You don't need to know Italian to enjoy this session, and even if you do know, it may not help much, since these are sung in Neapolitan dialect! We'll take a look at that too.
